The exact playbook I'd run starting from nothing. No portfolio, no audience, no case studies. Just proof, focus, and 30 days of doing the boring thing well.
Cool niches are broke. Boring niches pay. Rich, boring businesses bleed money on problems a weekend build can fix, and nobody is pitching them because everyone is chasing SaaS and ecom.
Open Claude and score niches by automation pain. You want a niche where the problem is visible from the outside and expensive on the inside.
> claude "rank 10 local business niches by automation pain. For each: the most expensive recurring problem, roughly what it costs them, and whether I can see it from outside" NICHE SCORECARD med spas no-shows eat 20% of revenue ★★★★★ roofers leads die in voicemail ★★★★☆ law firms intake takes 3 days ★★★☆☆ skipped: saas + ecom (every agency is already there) ✓ picked: med spas, one city, one problem
Then commit: one niche, one city, one problem. Write it as a single sentence. Mine would be: "I fix no-shows for med spas in Austin." If you can't say it in one sentence, you haven't picked yet.
You are not building a portfolio. You are building proof. One system that fixes the one expensive problem you just picked. For med spas, that's a no-show recovery agent: when an appointment gets missed, the system chases it automatically.
Use Claude Code to scaffold the workflow, n8n to run it, and a free Calendly account as your fake booking system to test against.
> claude "build me an n8n workflow: no-show recovery agent. Trigger on a missed-appointment webhook from Calendly. Step 1: SMS within 5 min of the miss. Step 2: email with a rebooking link. Step 3: alert the front desk if no reply in 24h. Output the workflow JSON I can import into n8n." ✓ trigger: missed-appointment webhook ✓ sms within 5 min → rebooking email → 24h escalation > npx n8n import the JSON, wire your Twilio + email creds, hit test ✓ test run passed, 3/3 messages fired
Three evenings of work. Near-zero cost: n8n self-hosted is free, Calendly is free, Twilio trial credit covers your test texts. The only thing that matters is that it fires for real, end to end, while you watch.
Now turn the system into an asset. Record a 90-second Loom of your build catching a fake missed appointment in real time. No slides, no intro music, no pitch deck. One video replaces every case study you don't have.
Script it tight:
# 90 SECONDS, NO SLIDES
0:00 "this is a fake med spa i built"
0:15 cancel an appointment on screen
0:40 sms + email fire in real time, show your phone
1:10 "want this running on yours?"
Face cam on. Energy up. Zero pitch. You are showing, not selling. Re-record it until it feels effortless, because the version where you stumble through it will not get replies, and the version where you sound like you've done this a hundred times will.
Volume outreach is dead. Small list, deep research wins. Pull about 100 local businesses in your niche and city, then keep only the ones with the visible bleeding problem.
> claude "pull med spas in austin from google maps, enrich with apollo: owner name, email, instagram, review count. Output leads.csv" ✓ leads.csv: 100 rows with owner, email, ig, reviews > claude "go through leads.csv. Flag every business with no online booking, or reviews mentioning missed appts and phone tag. Delete the rest." ✓ 37 flagged with the visible leak the other 63? deleted. focus wins.
For each of the 37, write one line of specifics: what you saw, where you saw it. A review complaining nobody called back is worth more than any cold email template ever written.
Now the reps. Ten personal messages a day to your list of 37, on whatever channel the owner actually uses. For med spas that's usually Instagram or email. Every message follows the same shape: their specific problem, your Loom, one low-friction question.
# THE MESSAGE (60 words max)
"Hey [name], saw [specific thing: the review, the
missing booking link, the voicemail-only phone line].
I built a system that texts no-shows within 5 minutes
and rebooks them automatically. Here's a 90-second
video of it working: [loom link]
Worth a look for [business name]?"
No pricing in the first message. No "just following up" spam. Follow up twice, three days apart, each time with something new: a second angle on their problem, or a one-line result from your test build. Track every send in a sheet: name, date, channel, reply.
With 37 researched leads and real proof, expect a handful of replies. When someone bites, don't pitch a retainer. Offer a paid pilot: "I'll set this up on your calendar this week. Flat setup fee, and if it doesn't catch a single no-show in 30 days, I refund it." Price it low enough that saying yes is easy and high enough that they take it seriously.
You already built the system. Deployment is wiring your existing workflow into their booking tool, which is days, not weeks. Deliver fast, over-communicate, and ask for the referral the moment the first recovered appointment lands.
Client one is the hard one. Client two comes from client one's Loom.
